Council News

 

1. The very first Diploma in Family Medicine organized by our College has commenced on 31 May 2003 and there were 37 participants enrolled for the said course.

2. The Board of Education will hold a seminar on SARS revisited - An Experience Sharing - "While we cannot rule out any recurrence, we can prevent the consequences" on 13 September 2003. Details of the seminar will be announced later.

3. Our College will support the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association in their Communication Health Project 2003 - 2004. Our Council Member Dr Ip Kit Kuen is giving a seminar entitled "Keep Fit 正面睇 " for the Community Health Day on 23 November, 2003 at the Hospital Authority Building.

4. The Board of Censors held a meeting to review the role of Censors. Details of the Board such as objectives, functions, composition, documentation and operation were clearly stated down for future reference.

5. The Board of Examination and Assessment is undergoing re-structuring. The three Subcommittees will be renamed as Conjoint Examination Subcommittee, Exit Examination Subcommittee and PMCCA Subcommittee.

6. The Board of Vocational Training and Standards had set up an ad hoc committee recently to re-examine the accreditation process of training centers.

7. Our Council accepted the proposal from Research Committee to carry out a survey on the effect of SARS which would be launched shortly.

8. The 13th WONCA Asia Pacific Regional Conference will take place as scheduled on 4-8 November 2003 at Beijing, China. The deadline for abstract submission has been postponed to 20 August 2003.

9. The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine has requested the Hospital Authority to consider extending the contracts of trainees (including our College's FM trainees) whose training had been affected by the recent SARS epidemic at trainees' option.

Diploma in Medical Ultrasound jointly organized by SPACE & HKCFP

Final Announcement

 

The Board is pleased to announce a Diploma Course in Medical Ultrasound jointly organized by HKCFP and the School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE), the University of Hong Kong.

 
Objectives :
To provide Family Medicine doctors an understanding and updating knowledge in the advancing field of medical ultrasound and its application in clinical practice.
     
Programme of Study :
This one-year part-time programme comprising of three modules will be delivered over approximately 40 weeks. It consists of a total of 407 hours of instruction including self and directed learning studies. The theoretical components delivered by distance learning (on-line via Internet and CD-ROM) is based on the Medical Ultrasound module offered by the University of Ulster (UU) in Hong Kong through HKU SPACE. Whereas, a Basic Principle and Practice of Medical Ultrasound and a Clinical Practice module organized by the College involving hands-on and face-to-face teaching will be taught in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Doctors who successfully completed the Ulster's Ultrasound module and the College's modules will be awarded a Diploma in Medical Ultrasound jointly by HKU SPACE and HKCFP.
     
Course Curriculum : I.
Basic Principles & Practice of Medical Ultrasound (organized by HKCFP & HKU SPACE)
This module consists of 4-5 meetings on the basic principles of medical ultrasound, with relevant demonstrations on the use and safety aspects of the ultrasound equipment.
       
    II.
Clinical Practice of Medical Ultrasound I & II (HKCFP & HKU SPACE)
This module consists of 12 workshops/sessions with hands on demonstration and practice on the use of ultrasound. Each workshop lasts for two hours with supervision and tutorship by specialist radiologists. In addition, subject to availability, workshop visit(s) may be conducted in the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM, Guangzhou where a good source of patients will be available for practice under supervision.
       
    III.
General Abdominal Medical Ultrasound (University of Ulster)
This covers general abdominal and pelvis ultrasound imaging and seeks to develop the skills of differential diagnosis of abnormalities of the adult abdomen and pelvis in the clinical situation. Three lecture/tutorial meetings will be provided to support this module by local tutors.
       
    N.B.
The Ulster University module will be delivered using flexible learning materials and on-line via the Internet. Students are expected to use a computer in studying this module.
       
Medium of Instructions :
Lectures and tutorials will be conducted mainly in English, supplemented with Cantonese, when appropriate.
     
Programme Delivery :
The modules offered will be delivered in a rolling schedule which will enable students to cover the underpinning theoretical modules prior to undertaking the Clinical Practice modules. The course will start in September 2003.

On-line Teaching :
For the UU's General Abdominal Medical Ultrasound module, on-line teaching support will be provided by UU's academic staff via Internet. Basically, this involves an on line schedule of lectures/tutorials coursework assignment and chapter posting, spreading over one semester.
     
Teaching Faculty :
Teaching supports will be organized by the College and HKU SPACE's Course Coordinating Committee. Lecturers and tutors will be recruited from specialists working in university, hospitals and other clinical services. Teaching of the Clinical Practice module will be conducted by Radiologists from Hong Kong as well as Guangzhou.
     
Time :
Local workshops/tutorials will be held on Saturday afternoons (2:15 p.m. - 4.15 p.m.)

Examination and Assessment :
The Basic Principles and Practice of Medical Ultrasound module will be assessed by 1-hour written examination. For the UU's Medical Ultrasound module, assessment will be by both coursework and examination. Coursework will normally constitute 40% to the overall module result and the end of module examination (3-hour written paper) contributes 60%. For the Clinical Practice module, case study records and clinical skills will be assessed continuously by the clinical tutors throughout the module. The pass mark for all modules is 50%.
Students who failed in the written examinations will be given another opportunity of a re-sit examination. Those who failed in the Clinical Practice module assessment will be required to repeat the same module when it is next offered.
     
Graduation Requirement :
Students must normally attend at least 75% of the scheduled meetings. They have to pass all the examination and assessments for the award of the Diploma in Medical Ultrasound.
     
Admission Requirement :
Applicants should normally posses either
a.   a recognized medical qualification; or
b.   an Honorary Degree or Diploma of the College of Radiographers;
c.   a qualification deemed to be equivalent to a. or b. above
     
Course Fee :
Member of HKCFP   HK$32,000
Non-member   HK$64,000
Candidates should send their cheques in full payment on application.
Non-member who wants to enjoy the reduced fee as that of a College member must submit application for membership to the College separately and must be successfully admitted as a member before registration deadline. As process of membership admission takes time, non-member is strongly advised to apply as soon as possible.
All fees received are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
     
Library (Optional) :
HKU Library ticket charge is not included in the course fee. For members who have no free access to the library, the cost for the borrower tickets currently is HK$1,505 per annum.

Time:
Lectures and seminars will be held on Saturday afternoons (2:00p.m. - 4:30p.m.)
   
Venue:
The Hong Kong College of Family Physicians, 8/F, Duke of Windsor Social Service Building, 15 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. It may subject to change.
 
Admission Requirements:
HKCFP Higher Trainees
 
Admission Fee:
HK$4,000 (whole course - consist of 8 lectures) HK$600 (spot admission for each lecture) All fees must be paid before commencement of the Course and upon receipt of official notice of admission. Fee paid are non-refundable and non-transferable.
 
Accreditation:
Certificate will be issued upon completion of Module for Accreditation by Board of Vocational Training and Standards.
 
Registration:
Registration and admission is on first come first served basis. A completed reply slip must be returned to the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians with a crossed cheque payable to "HKCFP Holdings and Development Limited".
